Monsanto is proud to be part of Water Efficient Maize for Africa
(WEMA), a public/private partnership, working to improve food se-
curity and the rural livelihood among smallholder farmers and their
families in sub-Saharan Africa by developing and deploying new
drought-tolerant and insect pest-protected maize varieties. The pro-
ject is led by the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF)
based in Kenya, and it is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foun-
dation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and the US Agency for
International Development (USAID). Other partners include: the In-
ternational Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) and
five National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) in Uganda, Ken-
ya, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa.
Monsanto is providing the technology royalty-free to develop im-
proved maize varieties that will be available to seed companies in
Africa for distribution to farmers in project countries and is also de-
livering the maize seed genetics and technical knowledge for breed-
ing efforts.
WEMA is approaching its seventh year and remains on target to
provide additional tools to help improve food security. The pipeline
is full and is in the process of delivering many new and improved
drought-tolerant maize hybrids to farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.
For the very first time, smallholder farmers in Kenya had access to
the first conventional maize hybrid from the WEMA partnership sold
under the brand name DroughtTEGO™, and harvesting is underway.
Some farmers – mainly those in the western part of the country
– have begun to report increased yields for this harvest. Many of those
farmers have previously used local open-pollinated varieties (OPVs).
The WEMA partners have developed the largest conventional breed-
ing and regulated testing network for maize in Africa and the partner-
ship helps build technical capacity in Africa to use conventional and
molecular breeding as well as biotechnology.
