SAB’s historical and consistent investment in the agricultural industry
through its raw material requirements, including maize, barley and
hops, has meant that the company has developed into a major force in
the South African rural economy.
SAB’s annual spend on raw agricultural materials in South Africa is
significant. Each year, SAB buys more than 1,8 million tons of barley,
GMO free maize, hops, apples and grapes. A consistent supply of raw
materials are critical to the company, which supplies millions of people
each year with their preferred drink, be it beer or soft drinks.
A 2009 study by independent economic group, Econex, found that
SAB’s beer operations have particularly high spin-off effects on
rural employment, with 110 000 or 2,5% of all jobs created in rural
areas being traced back to the ripple effects of the beer division, and
the majority of these positions are among low skilled and informal
sector workers.
“Historically, SAB has played a pioneering role in the South African
barley industry. It began growing barley locally more than three
decades ago, a strategic attempt by the company to become self-
sufficient. Since those early days, SAB’s support for the local barley
industry has strengthened considerably and the company is regarded
today as a critical role-player. The strategic industry partnerships it
has developed, as well as its close working relationship with
producers, is what has helped to yield successes and drive further
sustainable growth.
“Our collaborative approach within the agricultural sector has proven
to be the most effective method in creating sustainable growth, which
is a key objective of any SAB investment. The existing knowledge and
skills within the industry is invaluable to our success,” says Van Schoor.
SAB’s efforts with barley varietal development are indicative of this
collaboration and commitment to growing the barley industry.
