SAB works with producers and provides them with advice and support
via by the company’s very own agricultural specialists.
Supporting the local industry starts with competitive variety
development. Van Schoor adds that since its inception, the barley
breeding programme has delivered a significant step change in yield,
disease resistance and brewing quality.
These varieties, in conjunction with agricultural expertise and a deep
knowledge of the beer supply chain, ensures the best chance of
achieving success. The right quality barley is more than a commodity,
it’s the key ingredient in a quality product that will always be in demand.
“The success of these programmes and the local industry’s ability to
compete with the best in the world, is very much dependent on local
producers committing to planting malting barley and especially high
fermentable varietals which are key ingredients in SAB’s brands,” adds
Van Schoor.
This focused commitment by SAB to investing in the local barley
industry, extends to developing and supporting a more inclusive
environment with equal opportunities. These efforts stretch as far
back as the early 1990s when SAB initiated the Taung Barley Farmers
Project in the Northern Cape. The programme has helped to encourage
local barley production and create a sustainable source of income for
smallholder farmers. Today it supports more than 120 smallholder
farmers, each generating a sustainable income with guaranteed access
to the market as supported by SAB.
The new SAB Maltings marks a further and significant investment
in small scale and emerging farmers, who will be some of the key
beneficiaries of the company’s move to increasing locally sourced
barley. Van Schoor hints at an exciting initiative to identify and develop
these producers.
“Already in its pilot phase, SAB intends to support the development,
growth and sustainability of emerging and small scale barley farmers
to develop a sustainable, reliable and competitive local agricultural
supply chain for the company,” he says.
