Scientists awarded
for valuable research
D
uring the Combined Congress of 2014 that was held from
20 - 23 January 2014, Hestia Nienaber’s (ARC-SGI) oral
presentation entitled “Molecular Genotyping of Herbicide
Resistant Ryegrass (
Lolium
spp.)” won the Bayer Resistance
Management Award (the award is shared with Riaan Rossouw from
Monsanto) as well as the CropLife SA Award for the best presentation
made by the public/private sector in the field of weed science.
The co-author of the presentation is Mr Scott Sydenham, also from the
ARC-Small Grain Institute.
Drs André Nel and Maryke Craven from the ARC-Grain Crops Institute
were each awarded a prize for their respective presentations given at
the same congress held at the Rhodes University (Grahamstown).
Dr Craven received the Daan Retief floating trophy for the best
paper presented by a scientist younger than 40 years, for her
presentation on the impact of conservation agricultural systems
on pathogenic root and crown rot pathogens on maize, whilst
Dr Nel was awarded the Rovic Leers Conservation Agriculture award
for the best oral presentation for his presentation on the impact of
conservation agriculture on maize yield.
