Special
Fertiliser facilities can now
be certified
T
he Fertilizer Association of Southern Africa (Fertasa)
launched a certification scheme for fertiliser facilities from
the beginning of 2015. The first certificate was presented
to Metson Manufacturing at the Fertasa Congress in
Somerset West in April this year.
The main aim of the certification scheme is to promote the respon-
sible and sustainable use of fertilisers. It will ensure that fertiliser
facilities are capable of producing fertiliser products that are in
compliance with Act 36 of 1947 and that all legal requirements
are adhered to during the production process, storage, transport
and application of fertilisers. This initiative confirms that Fertasa
and its members are committed to promoting a culture of integrity
and trust within the fertiliser industry.
The certification scheme forms part of Fertasa’s collaboration with
the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) to
implement self-regulation for the fertiliser industry.
Fertasa appointed an independent third party, AfriCompliance,
to audit the facilities of their members and to report the status
thereof to Fertasa. The audit is conducted against a comprehensive
checklist developed from the Fertasa Code of Conduct and covers
quality, safety, health, environment and the specific requirements
of the Fertiliser Act. Fertasa issues a certificate once full complian-
ce has been confirmed.
Although certification is voluntary, all members of Fertasa are
encouraged to participate and to obtain the right to display the
“Fertasa Seal of Approval” on their documentation and fertiliser
bags. The audit cycle will be repeated at least every third year.
“We are excited about the measures that have been put into place
to improve the integrity and enhance the image of the fertiliser
industry,” says Mr Adriaan de Lange, chairman of Fertasa. “Our
future depends on the sustainability of crop production which is
a function of soil fertility. Fertasa and its members strive to im-
prove all aspects of fertilisers along the full value chain to the benefit
of the agricultural sector.”
