Gavilon South Africa

– who we are and what we offer

G

avilon is a leading commodity management firm based

in Omaha, Nebraska, in the USA and we connect produ-

cers and consumers of feed, food and fertiliser across

the globe. The company’s worldwide trading and distri-

bution footprint enables quality products to be sold at competitive

prices from various producers to end-users.

The company’s history dates back to 1874, when Peavey Company

built its first grain facility in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1982, Peavey was

acquired by ConAgra Foods Inc. and later became part of ConAgra

Trade Group. In 2008, a group of investors formed Gavilon and

acquired ConAgra Trade Group, enabling the privately held com-

pany to focus on growing its commodity business.

In 2010, Gavilon acquired the DeBruce Companies, which signifi-

cantly expanded the company’s agricultural operations. In 2013,

Marubeni Corporation, one of the largest general trading compa-

nies in Japan and listed on the Tokyo stock exchange, purchased

the company’s agricultural assets and businesses. Gavilon’s energy

business was sold to NGL Energy Partners LP (NYSE: NGL) later

that year.

Today, Gavilon employs 2 000 people around the world and is the

second largest grain handler in North America based on storage

capacity and has one of the largest fertiliser distribution networks

in the world. Gavilon operates approximately 90 fertiliser liquid

and dry storage and handling facilities with over 1,3 million metric

tons of storage capacity. Eleven global offices manage fertiliser

origination and transportation from nine countries, and handle

sales and distribution to 14 countries. Today, the Marubeni Group

moves more than 8 million tons of nitrogen, phosphate, potash and

other fertiliser products worldwide.

Gavilon South Africa

The company has been doing business in Africa since 1981. In

2009, Gavilon opened an office in Johannesburg to manage

fertiliser distribution in South Africa and in neighbouring countries.

The Bryanston based office employs eleven team members who

are committed to serving its customers from order to product

delivery. They distribute fertiliser, including granular and prilled

urea, calcium ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate, mono

ammonium phosphate, various types of potassium, micro-elements

and NPK blends, to all key growing areas countrywide from its

main warehouse located in Durban.

The company provides agronomy services to bring the latest

trends in agriculture to the South African growers. In addition,

Gavilon is currently engaged with several organisations working

toward bringing cost-effective alternatives to growers and helping

to reduce input costs whilst bolstering yields.
