N
ontwikkelende produsente by die goeie somergewas-
steeds relevant in hierdie veranderende tye.
huishoudelike en nasionale voedselsekerheid by.
is).
land. Hulle is in Bloemfontein, Ladybrand, Lichtenburg, Belfast,
A
fter another year we are pleased to be able to report
that many developing farmers benefited from the
good summer crop production season. The previous
year was a tough one due to the droughts experienced in
the western parts of the country – farmers are great believers,
however, and they planted again, hoping for a better season.
We celebrate their successes with these farmers!
Like in the past few years, our programme was funded by
the Maize Trust, Winter Cereal Trust, Oil and Protein Seeds
Development Trust, Sorghum Trust, AgriSETA and ARC. We are
dependent on them, and are grateful for their generous and
ongoing support.
The mission of our programme: “To develop capacitated
black commercial farmers and to contribute to household and
national food security through the optimal use of the natural
resources available to each farmer,” continues to be relevant
even in these changing times. Initially we tried to get everyone
to develop to the extent of commercial farming. However, in
South Africa we have other realities – such as farmers having
access to only a few hectares of land in communal areas. This
does not imply that the farmer cannot achieve commercial
yields on each hectare. Our approach is therefore to help
farmers to utilise the land available to them optimally.
In our modern, Western lifestyle we seem to have separated
farming from food security – we see farming as a business
where we sell our produce, get money and then buy what
we need. The situation is different for subsistence farmers
– they produce staple food for their families and then sell
the surplus. In this way, they contribute to household as well
as to national food security. The value of this type of food
production should not be underestimated – it is not just the
value of the grain that counts, but also the money-saving
factor (money that is very scarce). The more isolated the
area, the higher is the cost of the staple food (because of
transport costs, and also the opportunism of the businessmen
from the rural areas). The value of the grain to the household
is much greater – it translates into a saving at the most
expensive retaining price.
The focus of our programme is essentially human
empowerment through training and skills development. We
transfer information and skills to the farmer members of our
programme through various projects, on-farm support to
individual farmers and through the
Pula Imvula
magazine.
We support our farmers from ten offices across the country. They
are situated in Bloemfontein, Ladybrand, Lichtenburg, Belfast,
Almost half the levy (46%) is spent on research and
development. 21% is used to support the Executive functions
and include affiliation fees with other institutions. 2% is paid to
those Grain SA branches that support branch structures, while
12% is employed for the collection of the levy – this includes the
5% commission of the collection agents. Image building and
marketing use 17% to promote the image of agriculture and
accomplish the necessary lobbying activities.
Grain SA feels strongly that the employment of the funds should
be driven by and to the benefit of the members who represent
the organisation.
Member statistics
Grain SA
During the 2013/2014 Congress year R11,7 million were collected
via the levy – the highest amount in history. Paid-up members
numbered 2 409, while there was a total of 5 516 members
(see
Graph 1
).
Grain SA’s focus is to add value to producers’ farming activities,
to exploit export markets and influence the input and production
environment to ensure the sustainability of grain production.
One of the biggest challenges is to reserve certain benefits that
producers enjoy currently, and benefits that are negotiated in
future, exclusively for fully paid-up members in order to increase
the percentage of contributing producers. This will strengthen
the voice of grain producers in South Africa.
Grain SA thanks every member for their contribution to an
organisation that plays a critical role in the sustainability of grain
production in South Africa!
Ledestatistieke
Graan SA
Gedurende die 2013/2014 Kongresjaar is R11,7 miljoen se heffing
ingevorder – die hoogste in die geskiedenis. 2 409 lede was
in Suid-Afrika!
