T

he use of remotely piloted aircraft

systems (RPAS) is regulated in

terms of Civil Aviation Regulations,

Part 101, and associated techni-

cal standards. Such regulations were

promulgated and became effective on

1 July 2015.

The Part 101 regulations are applicable to

all remotely piloted air-craft systems opera-

tions, including those for commercial, cor-

porate, non-profit and private use.

‘Private operation’ means the use of a re-

motely piloted aircraft for an individual’s

personal and private purposes, where

there is no commercial outcome, interest

or gain.

For private use

Remotely piloted aircraft systems may

only be used for an individual's personal

and private purposes, where there is no

commercial outcome, interest or gain.

The pilot must observe all statutory re-

quirements relating to liability, privacy

and any other laws enforceable by all

other authorities.

For all other use (commercial, corpo-

rate and non-profit), a remotely piloted

aircraft must be registered and may

only be operated in terms of Part 101 of

the South African Civil Aviation Re

gulations.
