Average producer price = Safex, July 2016 price - average differential cost - handling costs
2
Gemiddelde produsenteprys = Safex, Julie 2016-prys - gemiddelde differensiaalkoste - hanteringskoste
minder gedaal of skerper gestyg as pryse in dollarterme
(
Tabel 2
en
Grafiek 2
Grafiek 3
). Teen ‘n geraamde gemid-
delde produsenteprys
2
van R2 169 per ton vir 2015/2016, het
die mielieprysindeks sedert die vorige jaar verswak weens
die styging in kunsmispryse. Dié prysgaping groei steeds.
KUNSMISMARK
Volgens Graan SA se produksiekostesyfers is R6,090 miljard
se kunsmis in die 2014/2015-seisoen vir mielieproduksie
gebruik.
aangeplant is.

prices are influenced by international prices, shipping costs
and the rand/dollar exchange rate. Most of the international
fertiliser prices dropped on an annual basis, but because of
the weakening in the value of the rand, most local fertiliser
prices have risen.
FERTILISER PRICES
From September 2014 to September 2015 the international
price of ammonia, urea and potassium chloride decreased,
while the price of DAP increased (
Table 1
on p 29).
The rand/dollar exchange rate weakened by 24% from
September 2014 to September 2015. As a result of the
weakening of the exchange rate the international prices
dropped less in rand value or increased more sharply
than prices in dollar terms (
Table 2
and
Graph 2
on p 29).
From October 2014 to October 2015 the local prices of
LAN, MAP and potassium chloride increased, while the
price of urea dropped (
Table 3
). With respect to the terms
of trade between the fertiliser price and the maize price,
the producer price index for maize and the fertiliser price
index were compared (
Graph 3
). At an estimated average
producer price
2
of R2 169 per ton for 2015/2016 the maize
price index has weakened from the previous year due to the
increase in fertiliser prices. This price gap continues to grow.
FERTILISER MARKET
According to Grain SA’s production cost figures fertiliser to
the value of R6,098 billion was used in maize production
during the 2013/2014 production season. This is R8 million
less than the previous year, and is attributed to a decrease
in the area planted.

PRYSE
in
Tabel 4
in dollar- sowel as randterme gesien word. Die
internasionale pryse (dollarterme) van glifosaat, asetochloor,
atrasien en metolachloor het vanaf September 2014 tot
September 2015 gedaal.
Tabel 5
). Wanneer die invloed

Local availability of fertiliser
The Fertiliser Association of Southern Africa (FERTASA),
has assured Grain SA that there will be enough fertiliser
available for the 2015/2016 production season and that
timeous delivery will not be a problem.
AGROCHEMICAL INDUSTRY
Good progress is being made with the registration of
agrochemicals. Regular contact with the Registrar of
Act 36 of 1947 assures that chemicals for which there
is a need are registered.
PRICES
The active ingredients of locally formulated agrochem-
icals need to be imported, therefore the exchange rate
has a direct impact on local prices. The international
prices of four herbicides used on maize can be seen in
Table 4
in dollar as well as rand terms. The international
price (dollar terms) of glyphosate, acetochlor, atrazine
and metolachlor decreased from September 2014 to
September 2015. The impact of the weakening of the
rand/dollar exchange rate can be seen when the dollar
prices are converted to rand.
The international insecticide prices decreased from
September 2014 to September 2015 (

). When the
