Value adding
Van Zyl Staalwerke
– for good value and se vice
Proudly South African
NIEL MARAIS,
Van Zyl Staalwerke
V
an Zyl Staalwerke is a proudly South African company situ-
ated in Reitz, in the Eastern Free State. We value good ser-
vice and quality and building long-term relationships with
our customers. Our slogan “Vir die boer” means exactly that.
The company was established in 1983 and as a proudly family-
owned business, is now in its third generation of ownership.
Ownership consists of four partners supported by a workforce of
130 employees with many years of shared experience.
Our operations consist of the manufacturing of a variety of farm-
ing equipment, a workshop and lathe department which manufac-
tures parts for the manufacturing process, and further extends to
repairs and modifications that are done directly for customers. In
addition to the workshop, Van Zyl Staalwerke has a complete retail
shop with more than 15 000 different line items from which to supply
the workshop with all spares and parts, as well as do direct sales to
customers.
To choose between South African manufactured products or import-
ed products means that some critical factors need to be acknowl-
edged. For one, the imported product comes with a price tag taking
into account the weakness of the South African currency. Another
important factor is consistency with regards to parts and the acces-
sibility thereof.
Our range of products is supported by a network of dealers and the
parts are standard for easy access at most agricultural outlets in any
region of the country. Our product is not sold with a warranty, but
rather a relationship where we will ensure satisfaction on all levels.
Operational outlay
Manufacturing
We manufacture a range of implements that includes small imple-
ments, such as bale loaders and three point scrapers, as well as large
equipment that includes trailed scrapers, 20 ton trailers, grain sieves
and debulking trailers. In total, the number of implements we manu-
facture exceeds over 40 different units.
A fully equipped fitter and turner shop serves the workshop with
parts and all bending and cutting are done in-house with a CNC press
brake and profile machines. Our products are manufactured entirely
in-house – finished, painted in our spray booth and assembled – all
under one roof.
Our product sales are supported by a dealer network that is con-
tinually growing at a good pace. Dealers include a variety of tractor
dealers, such as Northmec branches and Claas and Landini agents.
With our dealer network we are able to bring the product closer to the
potential client. All sales are supportedby extensivemarketing via nor-
mal printed media in a number of magazines. With the latest techno-
logy, social media, a website,
YouTube
and a variety of farming
related websites, we have entered a new marketing era. The annual
NAMPO Harvest Day exhibition also forms an integral part of our
calendar and marketing criteria.
Retail
We run an outlet in Reitz that holds more than 15 000 various line
items. This includes bolts and nuts, bearings, oil, ground engaging,
workshop tools, pumps and hydraulic fittings. We act as agents for
Afrox, Fuchs, Engen, Caltex, Euro Power, Senter 360 and many more.
Bigger than average stock holdings keeps customers satisfied and
any item not in stock will be sourced.
A second branch was opened in Frankfort in 2011 and after having
achieved great success, is now expanded by repair services that in-
clude fitting, turning and welding work.
In the near future our vision is to expand our range of products,
explore the possibility of another branch and enter the Southern
African market.
