You can’t have land transfer without

adequate support systems.

Land reform is susceptible to corruption

and opportunism.

The biggest criticism of land reform is

the focus has been on land and not on

people! It has to come back to people.

He said to remember that agriculture in

South Africa:

Employs people.

Sustains rural towns.

Is responsible for most of the economic

growth.

Has the necessary expertise.

Is important for economic revitalisation.

Has a sophisticated, organised agribusi-

ness sector.

Prof Karaan believes our strength comes

from our diversity. We have a choice of fight

or flight, to resist or innovate. He likes the

resolution taken by Congress to engage

with government on the topic of land ex-

propriation without compensation, but cau-

tioned that we should prepare well and offer

solutions at such engagements.

International export and

value adding

Legislation which supports the use of sur-

plus maize for fuel (which is in short sup-

ply) is needed. This would greatly benefit

local grain markets.

Maize-to-ethanol is profitable in the USA

without subsidy and the distiller's dried

grains with solubles (DDGS) is excellent

animal feed.

The challenge for the future remains

world surpluses. We need to challenge

the cost of production otherwise the lo-

cal industry will always be on the back

foot.
