T
heability of thegrain sector toprovide sufficient quantities of
food at affordable prices is being challenged increasingly.
A core function of Grain SA remains the sustainability of
our grain-producing members. Investment in agriculture is
essential to sustain and expand production, while investment in
infrastructure is key to economic growth.
GRAIN SA’S STRATEGIC RESEARCH FOCUS AREAS
Grain SA continues to make meaningful contributions through:
Increased market access for all market participants
New and possibly more sustainable markets remain
important to increase market access. Public and private
partnerships with alternative markets for maize like Asia,
the Middle East and elsewhere are vital. Compliance with
biosecurity remains essential for access to international and
regional markets.
Formation of new alliances (the DTI – DAFF – Grain SA forum)
Several policy documents relating to commodity-specific
interventions were formulated in collaboration with
government departments. The alliance aligned strategic
documents like the Agricultural Policy Action Plan (APAP),
the Bio-economy Strategy and the Industrial Policy Action
Plan (IPAP) with one another.
Enhanced communication between public and private sector
The lack of consensus on grain and oilseed agricultural
research policy issues threatens efficient research. This
necessitates partnerships among research parties, particularly
between the public and private sector.
The overall influencing and building of structures with
government to improve future spending on research and
development is progressing well. The formal forum between
the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of
Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and Grain SA is
strategically important to further strengthen relationships.
Inputs into policies and legislation applicable to the grain
sector
This past financial year Grain SA worked hard to get
consensus among stakeholders on the importance
of an end-point royalty system for all open-pollinated
crops in South Africa. Grain SA wants to ensure that new

Belegging in
forum)
Verskeie beleidsdokumente oor kommoditeitspesifieke
intervensies is in samewerking met staatsdepartemente gefor-
muleer.
toepassing is
