duurste betaal word – oor tyd minder
en minder word, terwyl die opbrengste
betreklik stabiel bly of stadig styg.
Alhoewel daar hordes mikro-organismes
en -gemeenskappe is wat hierdie funksies
uitvoer, word die bakterieë en swamme
hier uitgesonder in terme van grond-
vrugbaarheid en voedingstofgebruiksdoel-
treffendheid. Verhoogde populasies van
hierdie mikro-organismes voorsien meer
kos aan protosoë en nematodes, wie se uit-
skeidings direk as plantvoeding aan plante
beskikbaar is.
Bakterieë
Rhizobiumbakterieë speel ‘n kritiese rol
in biologiese N-vaslegging (BNV) deur
middel van ‘n mutualistiese verhouding
met peulgewasse. Tans word 65% van
N aan gewasse deur BNV gelewer, maar
daar is ruimte vir heelwat meer, want
die voorsiening van atmosferiese N is
onuitputlik.
Swamme
Mikorisaswamme verbeter die opname van
al die grondvoedingstowwe in die plant.
Hulle is daarom essensieel om die voe-
dingstofgebruiksdoeltreffendheid in enige
produksiestelsel te verbeter. Dit is veral
belangrik met die opname van fosfaat (P).
Minder as 20% van grond-P word
normaalweg deur die plant opgeneem,
maar dubbel die hoeveelheid P is beskik-
baar wanneer mikorisa teenwoordig is
en minerale P aan plante beskikbaar stel.
Oormatige P-kunsmis vernietig hierdie
funksie van mikorisa.
‘n Swam soos trichoderma het ‘n soort-
gelyke positiewe impak op voeding-
stof-gebruiksdoeltreffendheid, terwyl ‘n
verskeidenheid ander swamme ook ‘n kri-
tiese rol speel – onder andere in die afbreek
(mineralisering) van organiese materiaal.
Gevolgtrekking
Dit is duidelik dat daar ‘n gaping in die
ekodoeltreffendheid van graanproduksie-
stelsels in Suid-Afrika is, wat op ‘n
finansiële en ekologiese krisis vir produ-
sente afstuur. Die landbourewolusie oor die
volgende paar dekades sal ‘n ekodoeltref-
fendheidsrevolusie wees – daarop gemik
om die doeltreffendheid met ten minste
50% tot 100% te verbeter, terwyl skaars
hulpbronne (soos grond, water, biodiver-
siteit en klimaat) beskerm, verbeter en ook
beter benut word.
Die beginpunt van hierdie proses is die
herstel van grondorganiese koolstof en
grondgesondheid, wat gevolg moet word
deur ‘n geïntegreerde en multidissiplinêre
benadering, wat alle komponente van die
graanproduksiestelsel insluit.
