inoculation of
lucerne coated with Agricote
A
symbiotic relationship exists be-
tween legumes and rhizobia.
The bacteria infect the roots and
receive free energy from the
plant and in return provide free nitrogen to
the plant.
Therefore
Legume production can take place indepen-
dently from nitrogen fertilisers.
How
Producers can utilise the free nitrogen by
either inoculating on the farm or buying
pre-inoculated seed. Pre-inoculated seed
from Advance Seed saves a lot of time, la-
bour and worry. The Agricote coated seed
contains nutrients which support the seed
and the rhizobia. On-farm inoculation can be
achieved by applying the inoculant on the

seed prior to planting or during planting us-
ing specialised equipment. But take care to:
Check the expiry date to ensure you
have live bacteria to start with.
Keep the inoculant away from sunlight,
high temperatures and excessive water.
Follow the instructions on the label.
Use clean equipment and clean water.
Rapid drying of inoculated seed is es-
sential to prevent the premature germi-
nation of seed.
Inoculated seed must be planted within
hours of inoculation as the life-cycle
of rhizobia is dependent on a carbon
source which can be found in the soil.
Successful establishment
Place the seed in chemically ameliorated and
moist soil. When the plant has four or five
leaflets, nodules will be visible on the roots.
Conclusion
Supplementing available fodder on the farm
by producing lucerne is achievable, envi-
ronmentally responsible and economically
feasible. Using coated seed can get you
there faster.
