New versatile fumigant

for stored products

P

ost-harvest insect pests that infest

grains, dried fruits and tree nuts in

mills, warehouses and food stor

age facilities cause substantial eco

nomic and quality losses. With the adoption

of the Montreal Protocol, the search for re

placements for methyl bromide began in the

early 1990s.

Beginning in 1995, Dow AgroSciences

formed partnerships with leading stored

product researchers, fumigators and food

industries around the world to evaluate

and develop sulphuryl fluoride as a post-

harvest fumigant. ProFume

®

fumigant has

now been registered by the South African

Department of Agriculture, Forestry and

Fisheries’ Act 36 of 1947 for use by profes

sional and registered fumigators.

This product controls a wide range and

all life stages of stored product pests and

is used on a wide variety of commodities,

including bulk grain, dried fruit, rice, and

nuts. It is suitable for various environments

such as food handling establishments,

mills, silos, warehouses, stationary trans

portation vehicles, temporary and perma

nent fumigation chambers and storage

structures.

Here are some of its many advantages: It

rapidly penetrates porous materials; has

low sorption on fumigated materials; it

rapidly aerates from materials and com

modities; has no effect on quality or taste

of commodities; leaves no residue on fumi

gated surfaces; is non-flammable and non-

corrosive; does not react with materials to

form unpleasant odours; and flexible fu

migation exposure periods are as short as

twelve hours.

The use of the product as an exclusive fu

migant or as part of your phosphine re

sistance management strategy minimises

your downtime and avoids unnecessary

re-fumigation and product rejection costs.

It is highly recommended to adapt your fu

migation programme to include this product

before you discover phosphine-resistant

insects infesting and damaging your high-

quality commodity.

ProFume is used with special Fumiscope

software in a system called Precision

Fumigation

TM

. The objective of Precision

Fumigation is ‘optimising fumigant use to

maximise efficiency and minimise risk’.

Fumigators must undergo additional stew

ardship training.

ProFume and equipment is distributed by
