Rain to blame for drop in national maize yield

05 Sep 2011
Unseasonal rain countrywide during the most recent summer grains harvesting season is the main cause behind the 1,61% drop in the Crop Estimates Committee (CEC’s) latest estimates for total maize yields in South Africa. The penultimate estimate for the season set the final commercial maize crop at 10 679 400t from 2 372 300ha at an average expected yield of 4,5t/ha. This is 175 000t less than the previous estimate. The latest estimate put total white maize production at 6 199 900t, which is 101 650t down on the previous estimate. The final yellow maize yield should be 4 479 500t, which is 73 350t less than the previous estimate. The CEC expects white maize’s final average yield to be 4,37t/ha off 1 418 300ha, and for yellow maize it’s expected to be 4,7t/ha off 954 00ha.
