Markets edge higher; dry weather boosts crops

20 Dec 2011
NEW YORK, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Corn prices gained their most in two months on Monday on dry South American weather, boosting agricultural markets sharply, while oil rose on supply concerns. Copper prices fell on fears of a possible slowdown in China, the world's largest market for industrial metals. Gold dipped as well, failing again to live up to its safe-haven tag despite concerns about nuclear renegade state North Korea after the death of its leader, Kim Jong-il. The 19-commodity Thomson Reuters-Jefferies CRB index closed up 0.3 percent, inching higher after another modest round of gains on Friday. Most key commodities traded at less than half of their average volume, Thomson Reuters data showed, as financial markets began their year-end wind-down.
