Food inflation to hit consumers hard

10 May 2011
Once higher electricity, diesel and petrol prices have filtered through the food value chains, consumers could be looking at food prices that are 12% to 15% higher by the end of 2011. Prof Andr? Louw of the University of Pretoria said, “The full effect of these higher costs – as well as looming toll road charges – has yet to go through the whole value chain, and the multiplied impact of these costs still has to be felt by the consumer.” The price of beef, for example, has increased by about 25% in the past three months, he added.
