29 Mar 2011The foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in northern Zululand appears to have caught government, and game and livestock farmers in the region off guard, and will cost farmers millions of rand in losses. Farmers blame government, and are calling for heads to roll.
This year alone the current foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in KZN’s northern Zululand will cost commercial livestock farmers and game ranchers in the government’s FMD zone R30 million in direct sales. This excludes losses among communal smallscale livestock owners, which are also expected to run into millions of rand.
