Doha stumbles again on old snags

30 Mar 2011
INDUSTRIAL tariffs and the services industry are proving a major headache for trade negotiators attempting to conclude the Doha round of trade talks. SA’s policy makers are pessimistic about a deal being stuck soon. After a decade of negotiation, the talks are far from conclusion. The Doha round is a World Trade Organisation (WTO) initiative that aims to reduce trade barriers to facilitate global trade. The Doha round of trade talks has been suspended since 2008. Despite attempts by the WTO to breathe new life into the talks, agricultural subsidies, the liberalisation of the services industry, industrial tariffs and nontariff barriers remain sticking points.
