21 Jun 2011A recent decision by Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders to dissolve SADC’s Tribunal for a year to have its functions reviewed has left Zimbabwean farmers, who have been forcibly dispossessed of their land, without any recourse for adequate compensation by Zimbabwe’s government.
Last year, the SADC Tribunal ruled that the land dispossessions were racist and illegal, and ordered Zimbabwe’s government to discontinue them. But President Mugabe and his government have ignored the ruling, despite the fact that a previous independent review of the Tribunal found that it had jurisdiction in the region and that its orders were legally binding on the Zimbabwean government, and all others in the SADC region.
