06 May 2011Biofuels could grow from today’s 2% of transportation fuels to 27% by 2050, according to the International Energy Agency, which last week asked governments around the world to establish reliable frameworks for this transition.
Fortunately SA has made some headway on its biofuels strategy, which was first released in 2007. The nascent industry is driven by three main factors: energy security; job creation (a possible 25000 jobs); and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by lowering the use of fossil fuels. The aim is to achieve 2% penetration of biofuels in SA’s liquid fuels supply by 2013.
