Maize plantings in the main producing areas were planted later than normal; with delays first and foremost due to extremely dry conditions, after which good rains occurred and then the fields were to wet to plant. Maize planted outside the optimal plant window is always at risk due to frost that can occur. Producers in the west are still planting maize and should be completed within the next week. Conditions are generally very wet in Mpumalanga, with a lot of hail and water damage, and sunshine is desperately needed.
