DR JULIAN JAFTHA
– a true pillar in the grain industry
The inspiration award that is presented to an individual or
organisation in appreciation of their excellent contributions
to the grain industry, was this year awarded to Dr Julian
Jaftha. Dr Jaftha currently holds the position of chief director
of Plant Production and Health at the Department of Agriculture,
Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF).
“Julian truly stands tall in his leadership especially with regards
to the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) regulatory system,
where he chairs the GMO Executive Council in South Africa,”
Mr Jannie de Villiers (CEO: Grain SA) said.
De Villiers added that Dr Jaftha is an individual that goes beyond
the call of duty to support grain producers in this country. “He has
assisted Grain SA with various issues regarding production, inputs
and regulatory aspects such as the reviewing of the pre-breeding
wheat platform and ensuring that the producers’ privileges remain
in the Plant Breeders Act. He has also given assistance with SPS
market access for maize.”
Dr Jaftha said in his thank you speech that it is a privilege to work with
Grain SA. “I believe they understand the direction we as a country
need to go. When I sit around the table with Grain SA, I always
have the assurance and trust that we will approach a matter with all
the necessary facts on the table.”
To conclude, Dr Jaftha thanked his fellow colleagues. “We work in
a system where we are dependent on other people to make things
work and therefore in accepting this award I would like to thank all the
officials in my department and other departments who ensure that
we contribute to the sustainable competitiveness of this industry.”
