R
S Components was founded in London by JH Waring and
PM Sebestyen in 1937, under the name RadioSpares, sup-
plying radio repair shops with spare parts. When televi-
sions became popular, television parts were added to
the range in 1947. By the end of World War II the company
was a national distributor in the UK and in 1954 the found-
ers shifted their focus from fix-it shops and home users and started
selling electronic components to the industrial sector.
The company listed on the London Stock Exchange in
1967 as Electrocomponents plc, and in 1971 changed its trad-
ing name from RadioSpares to RS Components. Over time the
company has expanded and now serves customers in over
80 countries through 32 operating companies, shipping over
50 000 parcels around the world daily.
RS Components was the first distributor to use a CD cata-
logue and was one of the first industrial distributors to create
a trading website which launched in 1998. We now offer over
500 000 products across 2 500 global industrial brands in auto-
mation and control, electronics, electrical, test and measure-
ment devices, tools and consumables. We offer a range of
different options at various price points, giving customers the
choice to select quality products that fit their budget.
Some of the main benefits of having a one-stop shop with a
broad range of products, same day dispatch and great service,
is that it saves customers time and money through one supply
source, allowing for supplier rationalisation and the reduction
in total maintenance, repair and operating procurement costs.
Distribution
We have a global distribution network with warehouses all over the
world that carry significant amounts of stock. From the early days the
business was built on a ‘same day dispatch’ model and we continue
that today. If items come from our local warehouse in Kyalami, Johan-
nesburg the order will be delivered within 24 hours to main city centres
and 48 hours to outlying areas. If items come from one of our global
warehouses, delivery is normally within four to six working days any-
where in South Africa. The customer pays the rand price on the web-
site regardless of which warehouse it is being delivered from, taking the
hassle out of any hidden import or foreign exchange costs.
Smart farming
Our company offers the latest sen-
sors and IOT enabled devices for
industrial and agricultural envi-
ronments and carry ranges from
RS Pro, ABB, Siemens, Schneider
Electric, Phoenix Contact, SMC,
Omron, Arduino, XinaBox, Inteland
Brainbox, to name a few brands
that can be used in smart factories
and smart farming applications. Some
smart farming applications include the
monitoring of climate conditions, greenhouse
automation, crop and livestock management, storage manage-
ment and vehicle tracking – the options are endless.
Two devices that will be on display at the NAMPO Harvest
Day, come from our RS Pro range – a data logger and a gas
detector. The Pro-mote data logger measures temperature
and humidity in remote locations. It comes with a probe to get
to hard to reach places and it records and stores data to the
EasyLog Cloud, which can be accessed from anywhere.
The RS Pro gas detector is used to identify the presence of
and isolate the source location of combustible gasses such as
methane, propane, butane, ammonia, carbon dioxide and
many more. It detects gas concentrations by using an internal
sensor and indicates the presence of combustible gasses with
visual, audio and vibration feedback mechanisms.
RS Pro is the company’s private label range that started in
1937 due to a strong demand from customers for a high-qual-
ity, cost-effective industrial product range. Over the years, the
range has grown to over 50 000 products that include hand
tools, automation and control equipment, electrical products,
pneumatics, personal protection gear and test and measure-
ment devices.
