T
he ARC-Grain Crops Institute (ARC-
GCI) has been doing research for
over three decades. With farming
onstantly offering new challe ges,
it is easy to become discouraged; however,
the best way to overcome this is through
soundly researched solutions.
The Agronomy Section at the ARC-GCI has
been functioning at the institute for over
30 years and focuses on maize, sorghum,
groundnuts, soybean and sunflower. The
department has 21 projects running. Re-
search done here focuses on evaluating
cultivars; looking into new agronomy prac-
tices, such as conservation agriculture; and
conducting countrywide crop surveys for
maize. The department also looks into gen-
eral productionpractices for different crops
aswell asmodelling for climate change and
best production practices in the grain pro-
duction areas.
The ARC stand at Grain SA’s NAMPO Har-
vest Daywill showcase an array of theGCIs
mandated crops and highlight the latest
agronomy practices to achieve improved
productivity with minimal challenges to
move forward.
