Strippednaked at NAMPO
A
body stripped nakedwould undoubtedly causemuch con-
sternation at South Africa’s premier agricultural show,
Grains SA’s NAMPO Harvest Day. At the latest NAMPO,
held in Bothaville this past May, this is exactly what
happened. Fortunately for all thevisitors, itwas thebodyof aKubota
tractor…but the reactionwas no less enthusiastic!
“Our ‘naked’ Kubota – in this case the orchard and vineyard
8540N – got the attention it deserved,” said Kubota technical
specialist, Mike Heath. “Stripping the engine, transmission and
drive system covers so that everyone could see the unique inner
workings of aKubota tractor, was an education for our staff, dealers
and customers.”
Heath added that he doesn’t use the word unique lightly, but that
the “unique features that exist only in Kubota tractors are part of
the reason why they are one the fastest growing tractor brands in
SouthernAfrica and theworld.”

Engines – Kubota are world leaders in designing and selling
diesel engines of up to 100 horsepower. The 3,3 litre and
3,8 litre, 4-cylinder, turbo-charged engines fitted in Kubota
tractor rangesmeet all the requirements of emission legislation
around the world. Kubota are recognised, cutting-edge leaders
in this field and ensure exceptional power output together
with long life fuel-efficient, smooth andquiet operation.
Front axle – a heavy duty, high clearance design with dual
crown wheels driven by bevel gears. Not using any type
of universal joint, the drive shaft is also without joints and
completelyprotectedby the split sump.
Steering – exceptionally small turning circles are possible by
engaging the Bi-speed system on the run, which instantly
engagesanover-speedgear driving the frontwheelsat twice the
normal speed. During speedsof up to8 km/h thepower steering
action is super easy.
Braking – a very smooth and effective four-wheel braking action
is automatically achieved in 2- or 4-wheel drives through wet-
brake disc packs in the differential system. The hand brake
features a pedal latch and conventional lever system.
Shuttle clutch – just under the steering wheel is a shuttle
operating lever, this lever has threepositions:Middle=Neutral;
Forward= Forward; Rear = Reverse. The lever must be in F or
R before the tractor canmove. The benefit of this system is that
clutchless changes can be made on the move when operating
implements such as front-end loaders or forks and rearmounted
forklifts.
Gearbox– the transmission incorporatesa4-speedconventional
all-syncromesh gear set with a 2-speed range option and an
optional creeper-gear set. The driver selects the ground speed
